Give Us the M1 MacBook; Not Air, Not Pro, You Cowards

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. A survey, which I’m insulted I did not receive, implies that Apple is at least thinking about bringing back the 12-inch MacBook.

I love my 12-inch MacBook. I think it’s the perfect combination of size and portability, much more so than the 13-inch MacBook Air. While the one-inch in the name may not sound like much, in practice, it matters. Which is exactly why I still have and use my 12-inch MacBook, even though the device has been discontinued and despite the fact that it is not only so much slower than my M1 MacBook Air, but it also operates at temperatures approaching that of the surface of the sun. But on my lap.

That M1 chip would seem to be the perfect reason/excuse to bring back the 12-inch (or maybe even the old 11-inch?!) form factor. Presumably, the smaller footprint would lead to a shorter battery life than the 13-inch Air, but the M1 Air’s battery life is so good that I’m guessing it’s a trade-off many would make. Also, the Air runs significantly cooler than the cast iron skillet which Intel offers up. By that I mean, it runs at basically no temperature, the vast majority of the time, as far as I can tell. Did I mention it has no fan?

And yes, it’s true that there would be some portability overlap with the 11-inch iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard accessory. But Apple can’t speak out of both sides of their mouth here. They say they’re committed to both macOS and iOS as fully separate operating systems with their own devices. They should prove it with a 11 or 12-inch MacBook.
